Celebrate Earth Day in the city? You betcha.

We all know the definition of a city… glass and brass buildings rising into the skies, cement sidewalks full of hustling and bustling city dwellers, a Starbucks on every corner… and a lush green botanical oasis? Wait a minute…

As U.S. cities continue to grow, there has been an emphasis on keeping our downtown’s green. And, what better way to celebrate your Earth Day weekend at Stay Alfred than by visiting a few of the amazing urban parks in our cities. From Fairmount Park in Philadelphia to Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland, there are plenty of these bright urban spaces to choose from, and you won’t have to go far from your STAY to enjoy exploring our amazing planet this Earth Day.

Let’s take a look at the parks near our STAYS.

Boston Common & Public Garden – Boston – Established in 1634, Boston Common & Public Garden is one of the nation’s oldest public spaces! Spanning over 64 acres, you’ll find a vast collection of lush greenery and sculptures. How do you feel about giant boats with swans on them? Boston Common is known for their swan boats. They offered their first ride in 1870. Grab the camera and hop on the boat. This is a unique way to experience the park that kids and adults will love.

Fairmount Park – Philadelphia – Easily one of the largest municipal parks in Philly, Fairmount Park covers a staggering 9,200 acres. That’s ten percent of the city! Fairmount is home to numerous public art pieces and more than a few historical buildings. At Fairmount, you’ll also find the Philadelphia Zoo!  It’s not everyday you can see both tiger lilies and tigers in the same place. But you’ll get it all at Fairmount Park!

Cal Anderson – Seattle – Nestled away on Capitol Hill, Cal Anderson park is a true gem of Seattle. With multiple fountains and reflecting pools, this park perfectly combines nature and art in the big city. So much so, that it was named one of America’s best city parks by Forbes. Head on back to Cal Anderson on July 4 if you’re a hula hoop master. You may just win their yearly contest.

Balboa Park – San Diego – This 1,200-acre urban oasis is a spectacle not to be missed. Home to the amazing San Diego Zoo, this park is a one of a kind spot to experience nature and everything San Diego. In fact, this park is bigger than New York’s Central Park. From museums to artistry, this place has it all! It even had a nudist colony at one point! (Don’t worry, they’ve now vacated so feel free to bring the kids.) Fun fact about this place, an orangutan named Ken Allen once escaped three times from the San Diego zoo. Zookeepers had to go undercover in order to find out exactly how this escape artist was pulling it off.

Klyde Warren Park – Dallas – This 5.2-acre green scape is the perfect spot to experience nature in the city. Located on the edge of the Arts District, this city park takes up 3 full city blocks and features a play fountain and even a troupe of food trucks on the weekend. This park has free yoga on Saturday mornings and a game area. Pictionary and parks anyone? To top it all off, this engineering miracle is actually built over the recessed Woodall Rogers Freeway. You don’t get much more urban than that.

Tom McCall Waterfront Park – Portland – voted one of America’s ten greatest public spaces by the American Planning Association in 2012, Tom McCall Waterfront Park, covering 5.2 acres, is the perfect spot to people watch and enjoy views of the beautiful Willamette River. If it’s a hot day, you can cool off by running through the Salmon Street Springs, fountains that change in tandem with the city’s mood. And, because Portland is so quirky, you can stop by the world’s smallest park, Mills End Park, on your way to Tom McCall.

Centennial Park – Nashville – Stretching from Vanderbilt to the Hospital Corporation of America, this lush green space is a gentle reminder that nature still belongs in the city. Centennial Park is home to a full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens. Did somebody say photo opp? And for kiddos who may be bored by ancient history, check out the plane and train on display.

Audubon Park New Orleans – If you love birds, then Audubon Park is the place for you. Established in 1982, this beautiful city park is the perfect place to relax, bird watch, or go for a jog. Even better yet, Audubon Park is home to a labyrinth, an insectarium, an aquarium, a zoo and even the “tree of life” aka the city’s premier tree climbing spot. While no one’s quite sure how old this tree actually is, experts estimate it’s somewhere between 100 and 500 years old.

Tom Lee Park Memphis – Overlooking the Mississippi River, this 30-acre park boasts unparalleled panoramic views of Downtown Memphis. And when you’re visiting the city, what’s better than that? The park is named after Tom Lee, a great citizen who saved 32 people from drowning, despite his own inability to swim. Talk about heroism! This park is home to a variety of events including the Beale Street Music Festival and the World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest, which is celebrating its 40th year! Get ready to rock out or pig out in the park, during Memphis in May.

Alamo Placita Park – Denver – If you’re a floral fan, then you’ll find the meticulously designed floral displays at Alamo Placita park bloomin’ great. This park has earned the distinction of being called one of Denver’s most ideal and beautiful parks. After a visit, we’re sure you’ll see why. The park also boasts a picnic area and a playground, so grab the family and head on over.

West Potomac Park-  Washington D.C. – This historic national park is adjacent to the National Mall. It spans from the south end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool to the Washington Monument. There are too many memorials to list here but you’ll find most honor the heroic and presidential. Whether you’re buying an ice cream from a local street vendor and relaxing on the grass, or embarking on a history lesson as you wander from memorial to memorial, this is a spot you don’t want to miss. As an added bonus, springtime brings with it the blooming of the 1,678 cherry trees that line the Tidal Basin. This park, in addition to its historical significance, is also overwhelmingly beautiful. It will surely be a favorite on your trip to D.C.

While staying with us means you’ll be staying in the heart of a downtown metropolis, it doesn’t mean you can’t also get some time with nature. These gorgeous parks are hallmarks of the cities they’re in and we encourage you to stop by. Why not pack a picnic in your STAY’s kitchen and head on over?

Grilled Cheese: A Delicious Meal Anyway You Slice It

Remember that one kid in high school who got along with everyone? He was cool with the jocks, nerds, band geeks- you name it. In the proverbial “high school” of food options, a grilled cheese sandwich is this kid: loved by everyone and great in any situation. You can add anything to a grilled cheese and it works. Tomatoes, bacon, jalapenos, apples, arugula, even jam. And let’s face it, who doesn’t love grilled cheese? Only a muenster! HAHAHAHAHAHA… sorry.

And we’re not the only ones who love these cheesy, gooey, grilled works of art.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are so universally loved that they have their own dedicated day of celebration; April 12 is National Grilled Cheese Day. And here at Stay Alfred, we’re celebrating. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite grilled cheese spots in every Stay Alfred city. And while this may sound cheesy, we think these places are pretty grate. We know, we’re very punny.

Boston

Roxy’s Grilled Cheese & Burgers

With a variety of brick & mortar locations and an ever-roaming food truck, it’s not hard to get to Roxy’s. What’s tough is leaving. You may have heard of this popular Boston staple on the Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race, where they won our hearts… and stomachs. Roxy’s is renowned for their signature sandwich: the Green Muenster. Melty cheese combined with country bacon and house made guacamole on two slices of pain de mie bread. We’ve found heaven, and it’s a sandwich.

Dallas

Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. is the place to be if you’re looking for a delicious perfectly grilled sandwich. In addition to their tasty sandwich offerings, they are also known for their soup-er soups. A classic pairing executed flawlessly! Want to see for yourself? Try their french connection soup paired with their rustic grilled cheese sandwich. Located in the growing Bishop Arts district, this place is great for a tasty meal before you pursue the shops and boutiques in this up and coming neighborhood.

Denver

What Would Cheesus Do is a popular food cart in Denver that serves up a delicious variety of uniquely named sandwiches. From the “Go Fig Yourself” to the “Forsaken Bacon”, their sandwiches are both uniquely named and created. What else would you expect from a food truck named “What Would Cheesus Do?” Since this is a food truck, What Would Cheesus Do is never in one set spot, however you can check out their Facebook page to see where they’ll be.

Memphis

Tamp & Tap is a beloved Memphis area coffee shop that, in addition to offering a darn good cup of joe, also serves up a fine grilled cheese sandwich. The Plain Packard is a gooey mix of fontina, yellow and white cheddar, with bacon, tomato, mixed greens, and garlic aioli stuffed in. It’s served on sourdough bread and is the perfect comfort food. While you may be drawn to Tamp & Tap because of its outstanding grilled cheese sandwich, we’re confident you’ll stay awhile at this comfy local spot. Stop in on a Wednesday night for trivia or on the weekend for Bluegrass Brunch. The best part? You can pair your Plain Packard grilled cheese sandwich with coffee or craft beer. This place has it all.

Nashville

The Grilled Cheeserie is a Nashville favorite serving up sandwiches that will make you melt. Our local operations manager in Nashville, Chloe stopped to grab a bite at The Grilled Cheeserie and gave this place an 11/10. Their Pimento Mac & Chee melt is renowned in Nashville, but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. And with both a food truck and brick and mortar store, there are two ways to get your cheese fix. If you’re in Nashville, you’ve got to stop in and spend some of your cheddar at The Grilled Cheeserie.

New Orleans

The Big Cheezy in New Orleans is “pushing the boundaries of the classic grilled cheese.” How? With a menu that features everything from the classic just-like-mom-made grilled cheese to their “Big Cheezy”, you’ll find something for everyone. Curious as to what exactly is The Big Cheezy? It’s a triple decker sandwich with gouda, mozzarella, cheddar, pepper jack, Monterey jack and parmesan on Hawaiian sweet bread. Just writing about it makes my stomach growl. The Big Cheezy also delivers! So whether you’re fueling up before hitting the town or bing watching Netflix in your STAY, you can still get your cheesy on.

Philadelphia

Meltkraft is the kind of place where “Kraft Singles” is considered a bad word. This palace of deliciousness uses handmade cheese that’s ripened 3 to 18 months to make their signature sandwiches. And you can taste the difference. Meltkraft has an emphasis on fresh cheese, locally sourced from Valley Shepherd Creamery. The first step to making a great grilled cheese sandwich is great cheese and Meltkraft knocks it out of the park. It’s easy to find a Meltkraft in Philly given their four different location.

Portland

The Grilled Cheese Grill in Portland is the place to go for “a taste of your childhood.” What defines so many childhoods? Grilled cheese and school buses! At the grilled cheese grill, you get both. That’s right, you can chow down on a “gorilla cheese” (what I called it as a child) while sitting in a converted double decker bus or school bus. What sounds better than lounging in a double decker bus, enjoying a grilled cheese? Nothing! And unlike your bus rides when you were ten years old, you won’t be bothered by your elementary school bully. Score!

San Antonio

Cheesy Jane’s in San Antonio is a popular place. But don’t be dissuaded by large crowds, the delicious food here is worth it. This is a classic diner style place with an eclectic interior that matches the diner’s overall vibe. With a variety of diner food on the menu, from burgers to chicken, there’s something for everyone. We recommend their triple grilled cheese. And while tomato soup has long been considered the grilled cheese perfect pairing, we find it’s a good idea to pair your sandwich with one of Jane’s signature shakes. If you really want to relive your childhood try it with a peanut butter and jelly shake. Delicious!

San Diego

Cheesy Express is your spot for cheesy quick comfort food in San Diego. In addition to being well known (and well loved) for their sandwiches, Cheesy Express also wins praise for their friendly customer service. Whether you’re stopping in with young kids or in town with friends, this is a must-try for folks of all ages. Don’t let the unpretentious look of this place fool you. It’s reasonable prices and delicious cheesy sandwiches will make you melt.

Seattle

The Grilled Cheese Experience is Seattle’s original grilled cheese truck. Hundreds before have had the grilled cheese experience, and after trying it out you’ll see why. With an extensive menu, there’s something here for everyone. Feeling adventurous? Try the Purple Haze, a sandwich with triple cream borgonzola (the Canadian form of gorgonzola), blackened hangar steak, potato chips, and blackberry balsamic reduction. It’s all served on parmesan crusted sourdough. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Washington DC

GCDC Grilled Cheese Bar is a restaurant completely devoted to perfecting the art of the grilled cheese. As a kid, you (hopefully) never paired your grilled cheese with alcohol, but at GCDC we recommend it! And if you’re not feeling like venturing out, don’t worry. They deliver! GCDC does upscale comfort food at it’s best.

In honor of National Grilled Cheese Day, it seems fitting to end this post with a cheesy joke. What happened when there was an explosion at the French cheese factory? De brie went everywhere.

Blooms & Pop Ups: The National Cherry Blossom Festival

What do 3,000 travelling trees, the United States Capital, and a random Super-Mario pop-up bar have in common?

If you guessed the National Cherry Blossom Festival, you are correct!

It all began in 1912, when Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gifted 3,000 cherry trees to the United States to honor the friendship between the two countries (Domo arigato Mr. Ozaki!). Each year, D.C locals and tourists (and everyone in between) gather to celebrate this long-lasting friendship. And now, 105 years later, these iconic trees draw in over 1.5 million people each year. Crazy enough, 100-150 of those original trees are still blooming strong!

Luckily, there is still time to enjoy this classic celebration of friendship, spanning 4 weekends, from March 15th to April 16th, showcasing over 3,000 beautiful blooming blossoms (complete with a ‘Bloom Cam’), includes multiple parades, celebrations, and even a Kite Festival. Stretching 10 blocks along Constitution Avenue, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a sea of soft pink and white flowers and the uplifting attitude of spring.

But what else is so special about these Cherry trees?

Well, they just so happen to bloom all at the same time. Every year this prunus avium collection, without fail, blooms in unison between the same 14 day period. And no time during the festival brings more people in than Peak Bloom, which can last from four to 10 days, […] when 70% of the blossoms are open on the cherry trees surrounding the Tidal Basin.” Once these trees enter this peak bloom period, it’s a mad dash to the festival to see these delicate flowers before it’s too late.

But Cherry Blossoms aren’t the only thing popping up in the capital city to celebrate the start of spring…

Photography by Farrah Skeiky

Thanks to the creative minds that brought D.C. the joy of the Christmas Bar, there isn’t a lack of pop-up bars during this years festival. Once you’re done peeping all the blossoms, head over to DC’s own pop-up Cherry Blossom Pub and take in the elaborate decorations. Complete with paper mache cherry blossoms, festival inspired craft-cocktails (minus the pink-dye and fake cherry taste of course), and even a Super-Mario twist. Even though, you might find yourself testing your patience while you wait in line for this limited-capacity space, but it’s all worth it once you find your way through these three unique spaces, especially once you step into the King Koopa Room!

Photography by Farrah Skeiky

So if you haven’t gotten your fill of the Cherry Blossoms’ yet, hop on the metro green line and make your way to this creative one-of-a-kind space. I mean, when else can you say you went to a Super-Mario/Cherry Blossom themed bar, complete with Piranha plants?

Thinking of checking out the festival in person? Thankfully, 4 out of 5 of our amazing Washington D.C. STAYs are less than 1 mile away from the festivities, so forget the uber and take the chance to explore the city on foot! Once the sun sets, there’s plenty of room at your Stay Alfred to put your feet up and rest for the night like a local (if you aren’t spending all night at the Cherry Blossom Pub that is…).

Mardi Gras in 2017 – 10 Local Tips on How to do it Right.

Heading to Mardi Gras in 2017? Check out New Orleanian, and Stay Alfred’s Factors Row manager, Allison’s 10 tips on how to do Mardi Gras right.

Allison’s 10 tips on how to do Mardi Gras right

#1 Make a plan – 2017 Mardi Gras promises a lot to see and do. Make sure to plan out your time in the big easy. Check out Mardi Gras New Orleans for event details, parade schedules, maps, history and much more. All Stay Alfred New Orleans properties are just two blocks or less from all the Uptown Mardi Gras goodness. That’s a 5 minute walk from where you want to be.

#2 Bring a bag in your bag – Attending a parade? Make sure to bring a bag, there are tons of great freebies to be had.

#3 Check the streetcar schedules – It’s a great and historic way to see the city, but the schedule changes during festival season. Check out the 2017 mardi gras streetcar schedule at norta.com or the NORTA app (iphone or android) for schedules and special Mardi Gras details. Even better, there are multiple streetcar stops right down the street from all Stay Alfred New Orleans properties.

MARDI GRAS 2017 Streetcar Schedules

#4 Eat like a local – Need help deciding what Mardi Gras food to try? While many of the well known tourist spots will be overflowing during Mardi Gras, there’s still a chance to eat like a local. Stock up on traditional NOLA foods at locally-owned Rouse’s (can you say po-boys, muffulettas, jambalaya, gumbo and king cake?) Always a great addition to your Stay Alfred kitchen. The biggest problem will be figuring out how to carry it all (we suggest bringing friends)!

#5 Eat like a local some more – New Orleanians know how to brunch. Check out the Red Gravy, famous for it’s huge portions (no really, a dish can feed three!) and “healing” properties for those who checked out Bourbon Street the night before. Want something more refined? Try out the Gulf Fish St. Peter at Ruby Slipper Café. It’s art on a plate. And, great news, both eateries only a few minutes from Stay Alfred’s Factors Row!

You Can’t Book a Stay Alfred Reservation on Craigslist

Stay Alfred has been around for a while now. Back when we first got started in 2011, Craigslist was considered a valid distribution channel for vacation rentals. We used to post ads there, and it worked well: We made lots of reservations, and we hosted many successful stays.

Then the copycats got started. They’d copy our photos and descriptions and pose as Stay Alfred. Unsuspecting guests made “reservations” with these bad actors; paid deposits by bank transfer, money order, or check; and then were left out in the cold when they discovered their money had disappeared and they had no reservation anywhere!

You cannot book a real Stay Alfred Vacation Rental on Craigslist.
We tried reporting the scam listings. We posted notices on our ads to be suspicious of any company that doesn’t accept credit cards. We wrote articles about how to spot a vacation rental scam. But the criminals were too prodigious, and the fake ads kept popping up. They still do!

It was just too confusing for our possible guests, so we made the decision to stop using Craigslist altogether. Scammers are persistent, though, and the fake ads still pop up. We report each one of them immediately (and you can too) in an effort to prevent more good people from getting fleeced.

Craigslist, itself, isn’t to blame. It’s a great marketplace, and you can find some solid deals there–just not on Stay Alfred vacation rentals.

Here’s how to stay safe of Craigslist:

Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
Beware offers involving shipping – deal with locals you can meet in person.
Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) – anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
Don’t accept cashier/certified checks or money orders – banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a “guarantee”.
Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing “deal” may not exist.

Stay Alfred makes Inc. 500 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies

inc500_stacked_gold-600x445Inc. magazine today ranked Spokane-based Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals number 468 on its 2016 Inc. 500 list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. Stay Alfred is the first nationwide downtown vacation rental company, which provides guests with a consistent, hotel-style lodging experience city to city.

“Roughly 50 percent of all startups fail within their first five years,” writes Leigh Buchanan, editor-at-large for Inc. “Many others struggle to stay afloat, let alone grow. But these founders have not merely survived, they’ve excelled–becoming the heroes of the most terrifying, exhausting, and exhilarating journey of their lives.”

Stay Alfred’s meteoric growth — 814% in the three-year period ending in 2015 and $13.1 million in revenue, places it squarely within the elite Inc. 500, the topmost subset of the Inc. 5000 list.

“The secret to Stay Alfred’s growth without taking any outside funding is our people,” said Stay Alfred Founder and CEO Jordan Allen. “Spokane is packed with educated, enthusiastic people who meet our core values and want to help create an entirely new segment in the hospitality industry that offers consistently amazing hotel-style accommodations in high-end downtown apartment buildings.”

Stay Alfred is one of only six honorees working in the travel and hospitality space, an industry dominated by hotel and airline behemoths. The company has more than doubled its vacation rental property inventory in each of the last four years, and intends to continue to grow in existing and new markets. The company applies a combination of aggressive expansion, proprietary revenue management algorithms, world class relationship management, and a value proposition that tantalizes leisure and business travelers and attracts real estate partners.

The Inc. 5000 is ranked according to revenue growth from 2012 through 2015. To qualify, a company must have been U.S.-based, privately held, for profit and independent. Revenue in 2012 must have been at least $100,000 with revenue of at least $2-million in 2015.

Stay Alfred currently offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom downtown vacation rental properties in 12 of America’s favorite cities: Boston, Dallas, Denver, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

Stay Alfred accepts guest reservations 24 hours a day. Guests will find prices similar to those of an upscale hotel, despite three times the square-footage, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and equipped kitchens and laundry. They can take virtual tours and book online at StayAlfred.com or call (855) 481-2799 to speak with a reservationist.

A book lover’s dream come true! Photo by: Cacophony via Wikipedia

Welcome to the Pearl District, the thriving hipster and business haven in downtown, Portland. Over the years, this exciting neighborhood has hosted some of Stay Alfred’s most popular vacation rentals. There’s quite a bit to do in the Pearl District, and with our condos’ incredible walk scores, you’ll be able to reach everything on foot! Here’s five of our favorite spots that we think you’ll enjoy:

  1. Jamison Square Park: Looking for a nice place to sip coffee, relax, and people watch? Stop by Jamison Square Park and enjoy the waterfall and arched pool. You’ll see children playing in the water and people playing bocce ball in a nearby court. Plenty of fun food and snack options surround you, including Starbucks, Cool Moon Ice Cream, Hot Lips Pizza, and Jamison Restaurant. 810 Northwest 11th Avenue, (503)823-7529
  2. Powell’s City of Books: Powell’s is a Portland legend. Founded in 1971, this humble bookstore has grown to take over an entire city block within the Pearl District. Even if you’re not looking to buy any books, Powell’s is still worth a visit. There’s a coffee shop and gift store inside. Be sure to check out the “rare books” section for a real treat. 1005 West Burnside Street, (503)228-4651
  3. Andina: Andina is truly one of Portland’s best restaurants. It has an astounding 4.5 stars on Yelp with over 2,000 reviews. (Although we know that it deserves 5 stars!) This impressive Peruvian spot has everything that we love about restaurants- incredible eats, an exotic wine list, friendly service, a swanky atmosphere, and occasionally live music. It’s Portland, so plenty of menu items are vegetarian friendly and gluten free. Trust us, you’ll love this place. Reservations recommended. 1314 Northwest Glisan Street, (503)228-9535
  4. Portland Center Stage (at Gerding Theater at the Armory): Looking for an artistic night out? Consider stopping by for a showing at Portland’s largest theater company. The shows are eclectic and fun, and often include classic stories like Anna Karenina or One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Insider tip: Follow Portland Center Stage on social media closely and you might be able to catch free tickets! 128 Northwest 11th Avenue, (503)445-3700

    Deschutes

  5. Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House: Portland’s own craft beer brand serves up delightful brews and pub fare at this comfortable urban spot. Not sure what type of beer you prefer? We recommend ordering a sampler flight. Also, their pretzel with mustard and cheese dip is a delicious snack. Looking for something a bit more quirky? Also stop by Rogue Distillery and Public House while you’re in Portlandia. (They even have Voodoo Doughnut inspired beer flavors!) 210 Northwest 11th Avenue, (503)296-4906

Not sure where to stay in Portland, Oregon? Skip the crowded hotel experience and opt to stay in a vacation rental with twice the amount of space for a comparable rate. Just a five minute stroll down the street and you’ll find the famous fish market, Gum Wall, first EVER Starbucks store, The Great Wheel, and more Seattle legends.

Just a ten minute walk to the North, you’ll find the iconic Space Needle as well as the Seattle Children’s Museum, Key Arena, and Pacific Science Center. City of Seafood: Best Sushi Spots in Seattle

From the famous fish tosses of Pike Place Market to the Ballard locks salmon ladder, Seattle’s distinct seafood culture is part of what makes this city so special. Naturally, Seattle is one of Stay Alfred’s favorite cities to sample sushi. After asking my sushi-obsessed office what restaurants in Seattle were the best, these were the top contenders. Feel free to let us know what sushi restaurants in town you have had the best experience at. Enjoy- and don’t forget to make a reservation!

Seattle Sushi
Maki roll style sushi, Photo by: Suzette via Flickr

Sushi Kashiba: Shiro Kashiba is Seattle’s own master sushi chef. Kashiba, an apprentice to famed world’s best sushi chef Jiro Ono from “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”, has delighted sushi snobs everywhere by opening his latest restaurant in Pike Place in late 2015. Sushi Kashiba might have a high price tag, but it doesn’t disappoint. Incredibly fresh fish is paired with other interesting seafood elements to create sushi as it is supposed to be savored. You’ll be graced with attentive service and helpful presentations on what you are eating. 86 Pine Street #1, (206)441-8844

Shiro’s: Chef Kashiba also opened this 11 seat restaurant in Belltown in 1994. Though Kashiba has since moved on to work at Sushi Kashiba, the excellence of this Spartan-simple yet iconic restaurant still lives on through lead chef Jun Takai. Expect incredibly fresh seafood and traditional Japanese fare at its finest. 2401 2nd Avenue, (206)443-9844

Mashiko Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar: We’re not letting Shiro Kashiba’s restaurants steal all the attention. Mashiko is another high-end sushi spot in town with an enthusiastic fan base and rave reviews. What makes Mashiko special? It is Seattle’s first 100% sustainable sushi restaurant. The chef knows where every single piece of piece of seafood is coming from and prepares it with delicate care. A perfect place for special occasions. 4725 California Avenue SW, (206)935-4339

Japonessa Sushi Cocina: Looking for a more unique sushi experience? Japonessa combines Spanish flavors and flair to sushi without compromising the taste of quality cut fish. Despite the non-traditional sushi preparation methods, Japonessa is a favorite of Seattleites. The sushi isn’t the only fantastic thing here- the sake cocktails will not disappoint. 1400 1st Avenue, (206)971-7979

Momiji: With a serene, Japanese decorated interior and delicious fish cuts, Momiji has become a popular choice for sushi that’s a bit more affordable than some of the more high-end spots in town. With friendly service, a pleasant atmosphere, and a great drink menu, Momiji allows you the full Seattle sushi experience without the sushi-snob vibe. 1522 12th Avenue, (206)457-4068

Tsukushinbo: Don’t forget about this spot just because the name might be a bit difficult to say! If you’re looking for a wide selection of both sushi and other Japanese delights in a friendly atmosphere, this slightly hidden spot in the International District might be the perfect place for you. 515 South Main Street, (206)467-4004

Umi Sake House: This popular, bustling Belltown spot is known for both delectable sushi and a well-loved happy hour. While traditional sushi restaurants are more quiet, serene, and simple, Umi’s large, club-like interior and extended drink menu is perfect for a fun night out. 2230 1st Avenue, (206)374-8717

Hidden Gem!
Wataru: This totally unassuming restaurant hasn’t caught the public eye quite yet in Seattle. Tucked away on the main street in the Ravenna neighborhood, Wataru is truly a small but pleasant surprise. Chef Kotaro Kumita (who apprenticed under Shiro Kashiba, of course) only accepts 6 diners at the bar at a time where you can watch as he single-handedly creates sushi for everyone in the restaurant. The whole restaurant only seats 24. With Chef Kumita being the sole chef in this restaurant, don’t come here expecting a rapid dining experience. The foodies are slowly finding out about this place- make a reservation before you have to fight for one! 2400 NE 65th Street, (206)525-2073

Not sure where to stay in Seattle?
Skip the crowded hotel experience and live like a local in Seattle’s best neighborhoods for a comparable rate. At Stay Alfred Vacation Rentals, we offer the most walkable and safe vacation homes in town. Of course you’re condo will be close by the best sushi spots, as well. Give us a call any time of day at 866-232-3864 and our knowledgeable reservation agents will be more than happy to help you book the perfect Emerald City getaway.

What is San Diego Comic Con?

San Diego Comic-Con International (or simply SDCC) is a four day entertainment and comic convention that’s been held annually in America’s Finest City since 1970. With around 167,000 attendees just last year, SDCC is easily the largest convention held in all of San Diego. This year, the convention will take place on July 21st to July 24th.

This event is SO enormous and so popular that the San Diego Convention Center is regularly packed to capacity, which means events get moved to other locations including the Gaslamp Quarter, Hilton San Diego, Petco Park, Westfield Horton Plaza, and more. Basically, SDCC truly does take over the whole city. Expect to see attendees wandering around in costumes of all sorts. Even if you’re not part of the event, it’s incredible people watching.

SDCC

What to expect in 2016? At the moment, we’re not entirely sure- but it’s going to be awesome! According to the Comic-Con.org website, the OFFICIAL Comic Con schedule won’t be released until 2 weeks before the event. There’s still plenty of time for last minute fun (or last minute celebrity guests) to be added to the mix. Numerous comic artists and film writers have already made a commitment to appear.

Of course, the vendor’s hall at SDCC truly can’t be beat. It is the shopping mall of your nerdy dreams. Hundreds of vendors will gather to sell art, posters, comic books, clothing, costumes, gaming paraphernalia, and countless other fan products.

Superheroes

Comic Con wouldn’t be complete without a huge emphasis on cosplay. Cosplay (or costume play) has grown to be one of the highlights of all comic related conventions. Watch or even participate in the 43rd annual costume masquerade. If you’re brave enough to strut your stuff on stage in front of a panel of judges, you might just win a cash prize!

Ready to go? We’d love to help you book your SDCC vacation rental. Skip the crowded hotel experience and stay in a comfortable downtown San Diego vacation home. The Gaslamp Quarter stands as San Diego’s premier nightlife paradise. Some of the city’s most interesting restaurants, bars, shops, and music venues can be found here. (Rumor has it that one of Stay Alfred’s buildings even hosts a secret speakeasy…) Of course, the Gaslamp Quarter is also a fantastic place for family fun, as well. For example, Ghirardelli has an ice cream and chocolate shop location here that we love. The Hard Rock Cafe of San Diego is always plenty of fun, too!

According to Walkscore.com, our latest property at The Lofts boasts a walk rating of 96 out of 100. The Gaslamp Quarter is only a 7 or 8-minute walk from Stay Alfred’s newest location. The upscale, modern lofts building also feature access to community amenities including a fitness center, business center, private theater screening room, sundeck, and outdoor fire pit in a community courtyard. The sundeck features a lovely view of the city. Conveniences including grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops surround the area. Public transportation is close by, as well.

Reservation agents at Stay Alfred are now able to book these units for incoming guests. “We just opened these condos, so at this time we still have availability for San Diego Comic Con,” said reservations director, John DeRoulet. The San Diego Convention Center is an 8-minute drive or 18-minute walk away. Our latest location is perfect for a group of up to 5 guests per unit.

Stay Alfred currently hosts vacation rentals in seven different San Diego properties in numerous neighborhoods; including Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter, the East Village, and Cortez Hill.
