Our corporate clients range from Fortune 500 companies, large corporations, media conglomerates, and healthcare icons to family-owned shops and small businesses. And trust us, we love our clients equally.
That’s why we created our first-ever Business Travelership Program.
Stay Alfred’s Business Travelership Program is an opportunity for some of the most innovative startups and small businesses to partner with us and share their expertise on thriving, growing, and maneuvering entrepreneurship, not to mention making the most out of business travel.
For the next 6 months, Jared will be our official Business Travelership Ambassador, here to share actionable inspiration for small business via a blog series, social mentoring, and opportunities to ask him questions, with particular emphasis on how to grow your business and expand into new cities.
But first, a bit about the man behind the ambassador. As Founder & CEO of Food & City, a social media agency for restaurants, it’s a long road that’s gotten Jared Zuckerman where he is today. After nine soul-crushing years in finance, this New York City native had no college degree and all the questions in the world about his future. He was on a quest for that one simple thing - you know, finding his purpose in life.
Jared knew he wanted to inspire people, and he harbored a longtime passion for food - so, just like that, he left banking for baking. After opening retail bakery La Cheesecakerie in New York City, there were so many cheesecakes flying out those doors that he transitioned to a wholesale business and started dabbling in Instagram. The rest, as they say, is delicious history.
Jared shared his love of baking and food on social and created content that solidified him as a premier foodie - and the response was amazing. Out of the blue he received an offer from a local restaurant to simply come and experience the menu on the restaurant’s dime and share a pic or two if he loved his experience. Fast forward five years, 65 clients and a network of 244,000 plus Instagram followers later, and a business was born.
Jared applied his finance and entrepreneur background to found Food & City, a social media marketing agency that is not only existing in New York’s competitive landscape, but also thriving enough that they’re now expanding into Austin, TX. That’s where Stay Alfred comes into the story, but we’ll let Jared share that part in his own words.
We recently sat down with Jared for a little Q&A on who the heck he is, why he’s our Brand Ambassador, and just why you should care about him. (You’ll also learn what kind of small business mentoring he’ll be unleashing in this series). Enjoy!
Why did you decide to expand your business into Austin and what are your goals there?
Jared: “Friends and colleagues in the culinary industry kept telling me I needed to get to Austin ASAP. Now I’m in love with the city. I want to work in an environment that makes me happy, and Austin is a breath of fresh air and home to some of the best food I’ve ever had. The city’s also very pro-small businesses, so the opportunity seemed prime to get Food & City on the map and expand our services to Austin’s amazing restaurants. Our goal is to take root here in Austin and partner with some amazing culinary clients who we truly believe in and help support their dream, as well.
What does a typical business trip to Austin look like for you?
Jared: “Ha! There’s no typical trip. Once my colleague and I land in Austin, our number one priority is to get to our Stay Alfred travel apartment and set up our de facto office for the next few days. It’s amazing to have a separate living room area and dining area to set up shop - sometimes we even record our podcast in the unit.
And as you can imagine, the week is filled with food; we scout places and neighborhoods well in advance of arrival so we have a set plan for the week, but we also try not to overplan in case we want to explore at our whim. And because our Stay Alfred property is in such a central location, we can Bird or Uber everywhere.”
How did you first hear about Stay Alfred?
Jared: “Last year, I had never been to Austin, but we still wanted to visit and vet expanding the business there. I was shocked at the hotel prices in Austin; since I travel with at least one colleague we would have to get two hotel rooms, which would also mean we ‘d have to eat out at restaurants or order food every day. I said to heck with that and started searching for short-term rentals.
When I first came across Stay Alfred what really sold me was the flexibility of stay length - we could stay for one night or 30 nights, whatever we needed. Stay Alfred nightly rates were also affordable, and properties were in the areas we wanted to be. And frankly, you guys were a better option over Airbnb because we would be relying on a company, not a single host. I absolutely love the autonomy of a Stay Alfred travel apartment.
But believe me, the very first time we arrived at Stay Alfred 422 on the Lake, I was a little skeptical. But sure enough I followed the check in instructions and everything was seamless. The moment we walked in to our travel apartment you guys won me over - the space was huge, a great place to work and is now our routine home-away-from-home.”
Why did you decide to keep booking with Stay Alfred?
Jared: “It really comes down to the space, location and value - multiple bedrooms, a living room, dining area, kitchen - we’ll never go back to hotels. We LOVE the East Austin neighborhood and Stay Alfred at E6 is literally our second home. You feel like part of the community and less like you’re in a soulless commercial area. We’re close to everything and in the heart of where we want to be, but the rest of the city is still an easy jaunt away.
But I also run a business, and Stay Alfred has helped increase my profit margins as a new entrepreneur in Austin with not only savings on nightly rates, but also residual savings by having a kitchen and not needing a car rental.”
How does staying in a travel apartment impact your business travel and traveling with colleagues?
Jared: “It has drastically changed our lives. You’re able to maintain the quality of a hotel experience but save on price for more space. A travel apartment offers you so much space and pretty much everything you need, but at the same time it’s actually brought our team closer. After a long day exploring the city and meeting with clients, we can all hang out in the kitchen or living room, open a bottle a wine and just chill out and bond. Or if you need alone time - we all have our own space and private bedrooms to decompress; it’s win-win. Switching to a travel apartment from a hotel room provides you a way to nurture a strong relationship with the people who support you in building your business.”
What made you want to be our first Brand Ambassador our Business Travelership program?
Jared: “I’ve built Food & City on an authentic passion for what we do. And I feel the same way about Stay Alfred. I love the brand, and I feel more people needed to know that Stay Alfred is your advocate. Few companies are even taking it to this level of support - the Business Travelership program will be a place where small businesses can connect, ask questions, and hopefully find a mentor in me as I share our story, successes and challenges. Stay Alfred is not only dedicated to their business travel clients, they whole-heartedly care about the people behind them. As a Brand Ambassador, I simply want to try and inspire other entrepreneurs to live their truth.”
What advice would you give to other small businesses looking to expand into a new city?
1) Budget out for at least 6 months and assume that little revenue will be coming in as you establish roots.
2) Stay positive! It’s no easy feat to expand into a new city; surround yourself with a team that is going to support you and the business.
3) Have a plan and stick to it. It’s going to take time, but set out to accomplish specific milestones or goals and work toward them until they’re realized.
You’re a jetsetter - what are some travel hacks you live by when you’re on the road?
Hack 1: Stick with an airline that serves your purpose and build points. I personally will only fly Delta.
Hack 2: Before you even step foot on a plane, set expectations with your team on the goals of the business trip.
Hack 3: Don’t build such a regimented schedule while you’re there that you can’t allow for spontaneity.
Hack 4: If you find yourself stuck at the airport - pay the money for that airline lounge. You’ll be more productive, more comfortable, and you’d probably end up spending more money outside the lounge on food and drinks. If I’m in an airport, you can find me in the Delta lounge.
