Philly might be better known as a beer town, but we’re here to make the case that their craft cocktail scene might just take the cake. The best part is that there’s pretty much every type of bar slinging some elevated sips - dive bars, rooftop bars, speakeasies, happy hours, sun-filled patios, and dark underground dens.
With nine Stay Alfred properties in the downtown neighborhoods of Rittenhouse Square, Midtown Village, Logan Square, and Old City, Stay Alfred guests are just a short jaunt or rideshare from sitting back with a creative craft cocktail concoction that just might blow your mind and change your life.
So, without further ado, here’s our list of where to make all your Philly craft cocktail dreams come true:
The vibe: This corner joint is one of our all-time faves in Philly. The bottom floor bar features dramatic vintage vibes when you belly up to their bar with equally impressive and refined cocktails. A Smoked Eggplant Spritz? Blanco tequila, cappelletti aperitivo, lime, smoked eggplant syrup, and soda. How do they come up with these kind of creations?
The must-order: The Man for All Seasons: white vermouth, pear brandy, amaro braulio, yellow chartreuse, and jamaican rum. You. Will not. Be sorry.
Location: just a 6-minute walk from Stay Alfred at Rittenhouse Square
The vibe: Neighborhood locals can’t stop feeling the love. Known for highlighting the best seasonal fare, The Love is a two-story haven for those who want to indulge and eat well. Their cocktail menu is also seasonal, but there are always fun and refreshing takes on old classics.
The must-order: Let yourself fall in love with The Fig and the Lemon with Modagor gin, Italian limoncello and fig syrup. You might just order up another.
Location: just a 3-minute walk from Stay Alfred at The Sansom
The vibe: With sidewalk seating reminiscent of a Paris cafe, the recently revamped Rouge offers parkside dining along Rittenhouse Square and is quite possibly the perfect place to sip on something super fresh while people watching on a hot summer day.
The must-order: Sometimes you wonder what you’re a-gonna do - but there’s ain’t no reason why you wouldn’t order the Summertime Blues with Stateside vodka, blueberries, lemongrass syrup and fresh lemon. Tastes like sunshine in a glass.
Location: just a 5-minute walk from Stay Alfred at The Point
The vibe: Featuring quirky vintage vibes with leather loungers and an extensive bar, 1 Tippling Place almost always has at least one table or spot at the bar open, but is still a local favorite for many who are looking for a more relaxed environment.
The must-order: Their seasonal menu is top notch, but you can’t pass up a classic like the Gershwin: gin, lemon, ginger, and rose water.
Location: just a 1-minute walk from Stay Alfred at Rittenhouse Square (it’s on the same block!)
The vibe: Quite possibly the most infamous venue on the list, Hop Sing Laundromat is a very deliberately curated microcosm that strives to maintain a heightened vibe. Some find it pretentious; some simply love it. Self-touted as the “World’s Greatest North Korean Cocktail Bar,” the space demands a dress code and has zero tolerance for phone usage while in the bar. No hats. No selfies. No rule-breakers. If you’re looking for something new and way outside the norm - brave the wait and revel in what some have called “the best bar in the world.”
The must-order: Say what you will about their rules and regulations - their menu is the real deal. As Bon Appetit put it: “Lê, HSL’s mysterious, singularly named owner, has an alchemical hand with drinks, connecting the dots between seemingly disparate ingredients—say, Vietnamese coffee and Smooth Ambler gin—in a way that feels at once deeply considered and effortless.”
Location: just a 10-minute walk from Stay Alfred at City Center
The vibe: This place checks all of our boxes. Steakhouse? Check. Lively yet moody lounge vibes? Check. Contemporary library setting? YES. Barclay Prime is sleek, refined, and modern with chandeliers, abundant marble and one heck of a cocktail menu. If you don’t want to dive straight in to a high-end evening of libations and steak cuts to make your mouth water - we suggest dipping your toe in with Happy Hour before a night out.
The must-order: order up a Not Your Momma’s Juice with Roku gin, pear liqueur, aloe, and fresh citrus.
Location: just a 7-minute walk from Stay Alfred at The Republic
The vibe: How can we properly describe the vibe of Franky Bradley’s? We’re going to go with endearing, old-school barfly meets vintage variety show host. On the first floor, you can sit back and relax over dinner, but upstairs is where the real action happens. This place hosts a veritable buffet of live events - everything from a comedy cabaret to a Prince tribute, a Princess Bride-themed burlesque show to good ole’ local DJs. But before you can get your laugh or dance on, one must entertain their taste buds with a stiff drink - and Franky Bradley’s does not disappoint.
The must-order: When in Rome you order Franky’s Punch - Cruzan Aged Rum, white wine, passion fruit puree, lemon, vanilla and cardamom simple. Delicious and only slightly dangerous.
Location: just a 6-minute walk from Stay Alfred at City Center
The vibe: Known as Phillly’s “best kept nightlife secret,” the Ranstead Room offers a speakeasyish style, but without all the rules and rites of passage. Dim lighting, nakey lady vintage oil paintings, old-school booths, heck even the wallpaper is lush. People just really love the vibe here - but the booze alchemy happening behind the bar also doesn’t hurt.
The must-order: Leave your fate in the very capable hands of the Ranstead Room staff and order the Bartender’s Choice.
Location: just a straight shot down N 20th - a 12-minute walk from Stay Alfred at The Granary
The vibe: Are you one of those people who don’t identify as a hipster and yet you find yourself at hipster bars? Tattooed Mom is for you. This place offers big fun in a punk, graffiti-laden setting complete with bumper car photo opps. Add pool tables and candy on the bar, and you have a pretty solid recipe for a laid-back night with locals.
The must-order: Mom’s Mule: their version takes Moscow’s to the next level with a unique twist… but we don’t want to ruin the surprise.
Location: just a 9-minute rideshare from Stay Alfred at The Collins
The vibe: Hands down the most oozing, Instagram-ready locale, Blume is the new darling on the Philly craft cocktail scene. Love florals? Good - the space is covered with blue, purple and pink splendor. But even though the environment makes a big, bold bouquet statement - their natural wines and cocktails are on draft and making a splash.
The must-order: Just embrace this place and order the Cotton Candy: Reyka vodka, cotton candy and club soda. Make sure your phone is charged for the spectacle.
Location: just an 11-minute walk from Stay Alfred at City Center
The vibe: We have a serious soft spot for dive bars, and Bob & Barbara’s has our heart. Opened in 1969, this no-frills local favorite has quintessential dive bar charm, plus amazing live music and the oldest running drag show in Philly every Thursday night. Pull up a bar stool and discover why so many love this joint.
The must-order: “The Special” - the definition of old school dive bar brilliance is a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a shot of Jim Beam bourbon.
